About Balsa

Our mission is to inspire builders to do their best work. We do this by building tools that help them get work done. Our first product is a command center that integrates all the tools builders use — tools like Jira, GitHub, Figma — into a single application that's an ideal second-screen companion.

We're a highly-collaborative, results-driven team of five, with experience from Slack, Twitter, Airbnb, imgix, Ripple, and Stripe. We've raised $4.5M from Andreessen Horowitz and an amazing crew of individual investors who are themselves builders, including the founders of Slack, Airtable, and Dropbox as well as product and engineering leaders from Adobe, GitHub, Stripe, and Apple.

We are absolutely obsessed with builders. We believe human progress comes from their hard work, ingenuity, and adaptability. Builders gave us the Golden Gate Bridge, the Internet, the Smallpox vaccine. We're here to infuse more joy and productivity into every builder's day, and in doing so, we hope to improve the lives of everyone. If that mission gets you fired up, join us!

About the Role

We are looking for engineers to build the next generation of builders' tools. Our mindset is "whatever it takes"; we will go to the ends of the earth to improve the lives of builders. Often, that means choosing the harder engineering path so we can better fit into each builder's environment. We've discovered lots of rewarding engineering challenges in this pursuit.

We're small but ambitious. You'll thrive at Balsa if you are curious, demanding of yourself, and unafraid to give and receive feedback.

Our technical stack:

  • Full-stack TypeScript
  • React and GraphQL
  • Electron

What you'll do

  • As a builder yourself, you'll have a big voice in the overall direction of Balsa, as we tackle whichever challenges we believe will be most impactful on the lives of builders.
  • You'll build the backend systems that support our apps, from databases to APIs.
  • You'll collaborate with our frontend engineers and designers to build features that are snappy and scalable. We use all the tricks in our playbook to boost perceived performance, hide latency, and make our apps work well offline.
  • You'll help scale our sync engine, which connects Balsa to all the tools builders use, including Jira, GitHub, and Figma. Abstraction, reusability, and modularity will be especially important here — our sync engine will need to be able to pull chart data from Grafana as easily as it pulls technical documents from Dropbox Paper or spreadsheets from Google Sheets.
  • You'll help us maintain a high bar for technical excellence by writing automated tests, giving thoughtful code reviews, and improving the overall health and quality of the codebase.
  • You'll help us design our systems to be secure and highly available, with a particular focus on the confidentiality of our customers' data. (They're trusting us with many of their most sensitive internal business systems.)

What you'll do

  • You'll assemble a native-quality desktop app using React and Electron, stretching the limits of high-performance Javascript in an ultra-polished UI.
  • You'll craft high-fidelity, accessible React components to help us maintain consistency and productivity as we scale our apps.
  • You'll collaborate with our designers and backend engineers to build features that are aesthetically pleasing, highly functional, and scalable. We believe tools should be a joy to use, so we use all the tricks in our playbook to boost perceived performance, hide latency, and make our apps work well offline.
